¡Campeón de Liga por 32ª vez!*

*Spanish might be incorrect, but the point is, Real Madrid won La Liga! (And the title is trying to say “Champions of the league for the 32nd time!”)

[UK 2011] The long flight to London and our first night

Thursday, April 28, 2011

Taking off from one of the world’s top 5 worst airports, we boarded the EY 421 flight to Abu Dhabi, barely able to contain our excitement. Coming off the disappointment of the 3rd El Clasico for 2011, this was a much needed bright spot. A bit of our excitement was dampened upon settling on our seats and smelling the unmistakable stench of vomit. Hello, Coral Economy Class. The smell did go away though; either we got desensitized or the flight attendant spritzing the area with her perfume got rid of the stink.

There was a bit of turbulence just as I was watching the scene in Deathly Hallows I when the Death Eaters and Voldemort started attacking the seven Harrys.  4D adventure!

We arrived at the Abu Dhabi International Airport to free wifi, lots of sand outside and insanely expensive airport food. I think I drank the most expensive soft drink of my life! Not much happened at the airport, except Pat and I found out Gaby Concepcion’s choice in deli sandwiches from a kababayan working there. It was more than 40 degrees out and I was very thankful to the centralized air conditioning.

Abu Dahbi International Airport

Sand for miles. My last (daytime) view of Abu Dhabi.

And then it was off to London.

When asked what we were doing in London (by friends, people we encounter on flights, by immigration officers), we always say “To attend the wedding of a friend.” Most of them would laugh and think we’re joking since that very day was the day of the royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Catherine Middleton. Not that I would mind attending that wedding, or at least the wedding feast. Or the honeymoon.

As soon as we got outside, we got a blast of super cold wind but nobody minded. Hello, we were in freaking London! I took pictures of everything, from the red bus that took us to well, another bus to road signs to people. I was such a tourist, like you wouldn’t believe.

Jerome, me, Ajay, and Pat

The bus that we took to Croydon (where our hotel was) was packed and we were standing with our huge suitcases in tow. That’s fine with me, as I can see up front everything we passed. My first impression was that brick looks really good on houses. Everything was interesting: the pubs that we passed, the style of the houses, the road, the shops… Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt. That is, until a kid got sick all over the floor. This was one of those times I was thankful I always have a pack of wet wipes, hand sanitizer, and packs of tissues. But what is it with this trip and barf?

We got to the hotel tired and unable to do anything else but unpack and had a squealing and hugging session when we saw Angel. Who , by the way, asked me to bring her the book “Fancy Pants” which I misunderstood. I brought her fancy pants. Like, black slacks, which in my estimation was “fancy” because it had silvery thread running through it. My life is a collection of anecdotes, mostly of my failures.

We went to bed with “I can’t believe we’re here!” (the obvious), “This is going to be epic!” (the prophetic) and “We’re so going to see football players!” (the as-if).

I wonder if I should have done more research where football players hang out on their free time (Nando’s, obv, but which branch?).

Look, I had a blurb about Real Madrid 4 years ago!

Sometimes, I love reading old blog entries. The rest of the time, I want to cringe and go back in time to stop myself from blogging. This particular entry I found is more on the cringe-worthy side, but it’s also quite a find.

  1. I mentioned Real Madrid. 🙂
  2. What, did I hate capitalizing back then or something?
  3. I wonder which teams were playing…
  4. I hope it wasn’t Arsenal vs. ________, because I hate eating my words.
  5. I failed Chem 153 in the end.
  6. I did retake it, but I cannot remember what Virial Expansion is. (googling right now)
  7. LOL @ “Spanish games”

This blog should be deleted. Problem is I can’t access it. It’s now doomed to be on the internet forever. DOOMED!
